designer spotlight | Marc Newson

I was preparing for a holiday to Spain when I had the most amazing design epiphany, I came across the too simple to be true designs of Marc Newson. Sniffing out a decent but compact suitcase I came across a brightly coloured range of suitcases manufactured by Samsonite but designed by Marc Newson and with a zesty yellow wheely case I hit the airport with all eyes on me and my case! wow did I feel special. Is that not the point of designer? to make us feel special, to grace the owner with a feeling of pride of ownership. Marc Newson’s talents have spread far and wide and are not restricted to product design, Newson’s latest designer collaboration is with Smeg to produce droolworthy kitchen appliances but in his career he has turned his hand to furniture, cars (yes a concept car for Ford) and also the interior for the new Virgin galactic plane-come-spaceship. Marc Newson reduces design to its single most common purpose and flair and makes it work.
